Brett Gruber and Neil Delos Reyes fought last night at XFS "Rude Awakening" in Cuyahoga Falls. Brett took on a bigger, stronger fighter in the 145lb class and in the first round it went quickly to the ground with Brett in his guard. Brett applied at least 4 armbar attempts, but his opponent was able to defend and get out. In the second, after some stand up exchanges, it went to the ground again, but Brett this time sunk in a triangle. But his opponent wasn't going away easily and picked him up three times and slammed him trying to break the hold (one time Brett was suspended over the guy's head.) But the triangle was DEEP and he couldn't take it anymore. Brett wins in the Second Round and moves to 1-2.
Neil had a tough battle in the 185lb class. Neil tried to force his opponent to stand up and even landed a few decent strikes, but his opponent was the superior wrestler and was able to take him down and maintain good position. The second and third rounds went the same way with Neil unable to defend the takedown and escape from poor positioning on the mat. Neil drops the contest by unanimous decision.
