World Champion Pablo Popovitch will be conducting a seminar on Sunday March 18, 2012, from 12 to 2pm at the Brazilain Jiu Jitsu Center of Ohio.

In 2011, Pablo competed in the ADCC World Championships where he took silver medals in both his weight class (-88kg) and absolute class and the IBJJF No Gi World Championships where he took a silver medal in the medium heavyweight division.

The cost for the seminar is $60 (cash only). The 2 hour session will be with the Gi.

2012 SEASON BEGINS

Training and preparation starts 1/2/12 for our winter season. In the next 4 months, there are 5 competitions to select from, including the IBJJF Pan Jiu Jitsu Championship in CA. Everyone expect some intense practice.

Victory in Montreal

Eric Parker, Blue Belt, traveled to Montreal Canada on 9/4/11 to participate in the IBJJF Montreal International. He brought back some hardware from his trip as he took a silver medal in his division. Watch his semi-final and his final matches below.

Gruber Victorious at NAAFS. Sets sights on Future Pro Debut

Brett Gruber returned to the cage last night at NAAFS Proving Grounds in Streetsboro Ohio, after a 7 month layoff. His last fight was a tough decision loss in the 2010 NAAFS Bantamweight Amateur Championship finals. Brett took on a tough experienced Nate “The Robot” Mango (12-6) in a featured bout.

Brett took care of business rather quickly. He countered a take down from Mango and secured a guillotine choke from the guard, which he then reversed to the full mount. He secured the tap out in 1:30 in the first round.

Now at 5-3, Brett is going to turn his focus on pursuing a professional MMA career with a pro debut, hopefully, by the end of the year.

Derek Schultz, also on the card last night, lost a controversial unanimous decision. While the first round went to his opponent, Derek established effective cage control and was the dominant grappler in rounds 2 and 3 which many believed to be the difference. The judges however disagreed and appeared to have scored round 2 differently (he clearly won round 3 and almost secured a submission.) Regardless, he fought with determination from wire to wire and will also be back by the end of the year.

Student Earns Double Promotion

Anthony Santo Domingo had a busy May. Fresh off of closing out his Gi and No Gi divisions at the OGC in April with his team mate Chris Leggett, I was proud to promote him to the rank of Blue Belt. After his promotion, he traveled to New York City where, on Memorial Day, Santo graduated to the blue/red cord in Capoeira Brasil under instructor Tuzinho, and earned the title of Monitor. At this level, he will be teaching kids and beginner adults. As Monitor, he is expected to fully incorporate a large variety of advanced movements including acrobatics, strength movements, and takedowns. He also has a large repertoire of songs and can play all instruments.

Team Chard takes 2nd Place at OGC

On Saturday 4/23/11, Team Chard had a huge contingent of fighters attend the Ohio Grappling Challenge in Medina, Ohio. After a combined effort of 20 medals (8 Gold, 8 Silver, 4 Bronze) in the Gi and No Gi Divisions, we placed second as a team in the No Gi division. For the complete results, go here.

Jon Bobel Triangles his way into the second round of Pro Invite

Prior to the start of the divisions, Team Chard Instructor, Jon Bobel participated in the 16-man pro invitational. Jon made it into the second round, after a come from behind submission win. Jon’s bid for the $1000 cash purse was stalled after he lost to Bobby Jones by a score of 2-0.

2011 Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships-Day 3

Our final day of competition for Team Chard was Saturday as Tim Lehman participated in the Masters (30-35) Purple Belt Super Heavy (221 lbs) and Open Weight classes. Tim’s weight category started at noon and everything was proceeding normally, until, at Gi check, his uniform was disqualified for being too tight in the arms. We scrambled over to one of the vendors at the event, bought a larger Gi, and got him on the mat.

He started off his match by pulling guard very quickly and worked tirelessly for a submission. At one point he had an arm bar locked, but his opponent would not give in. Down by an advantage point, with about 20 seconds to go, his opponent passed his guard and securing a win by a score of 3-0.

Tim returned in the evening to contest the Absolute (no weight limit) category. His first opponent he drew was a lightweight competitor. Tim again pulled guard and proceeded to sweep, pass, and use his knee on the belly for the entire 6 minutes to dominate. He moved on to the second round with an 11-0 win.

His second round opponent had an impressive stand up game in his first round win. So going in, Tim knew he had to establish guard very quickly to avoid a take down. Not only did he pull guard effectively, but he was able to isolate his opponent’s arm and quickly moved into an inverted arm bar for the submission win, just 1:14 into the match (and yes, he bought a second, blue Gi for the absolute.)

He then moved on to the final 8 of the division. His next opponent, a very solid competitor, was one he had met 2 years ago as a blue belt. His opponent came out and pulled guard immediately. Tim did a very good job stabilizing his position for a guard pass and almost was successful. However, his opponent’s guard was too active too control. He swept Tim and went up 2-0. Tim tried to work his guard, but as his opponent was passing, Tim gave up his back and his opponent secured a Gi choke for the win. Tim’s march to the podium ended in the third round (his opponent went on to win the category).

All in all, a great weekend of competition, effort, and fun for the team.

2011 Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships-Day 2

Friday afternoon, we returned to the Bren Center for the Adult Purple Belt divisions. The Purple Belts at the Pan are always very competitive and entertaining to watch. Jon Bobel was up for Team Chard in the medium heavy weight division (194 lbs). After his Gi and weight check in, he was escorted to the mat for his match.

Jon pulled guard very quickly and tried to work a variety of sweeps. His opponent had a very good base and wasn’t budging. Methodically, his opponent made his way into Jon’s half guard, then passed the guard to go ahead 3-0. But, Jon was able to replace his guard and secure a triangle. But time was not on his side as he could not sink the submission in before time expired.

Saturday is our last day for competition as Tim Lehman is up in the Masters (age 30-35) Purple Belt division.
